Tham & Videgård's new apartments balance urban and lakeside contexts

JÖNKÖPING – The site of Tham & Videgård Arkitekter’s latest project is highly enviable real estate, located along the quayside of Lake Munksjö and just a stone’s throw away from Lake Vättern, Sweden’s second largest. The Stockholm-based firm were commissioned to design characteristic and sustainable new urban housing for this area.

So as not to disturb the placid setting, the architects chose to split the requested number of apartments into two adjacent, cubic units. The majority of the apartments are located at the corners of the volume to maximise view and light, and the buildings rest at a generous angle to each other to open up the inward faces. A rounded, vertical atrium with zigzagging staircases defines the centre of each unit, establishing a social space for residents.

Each apartment is granted a private balcony on an outer layer of terraces. A transparent envelope of anodised aluminum covers the terraces, providing a tonal contrast between the two buildings in black and bronze and serving as a ‘buffer zone’ between the cozy interiors and the vast scale of the surrounding natural and urban elements. The voids created by the undulating lines of this screen alternate every other level to form a pattern that unifies the distinct levels of each into one iconic structure.
