Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects fuses towers and functions together

COPENHAGEN – Five circular towers have been fused together to form a complex of offices, retail and parking in the centre of the Danish capital. Axel Towers is hoped to help populate and activate the urban area around Alextorv Square – a prime location located minutes away from the city’s main train station and opposite the famous Tivoli Garden attraction. Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects composed the tubular units at varying heights but kept them beneath the line of the surrounding area in order to stay connected with the rest of the city.

‘The area does not have an overall building aesthetic, which gave us the freedom to develop Axel Towers as a freestanding building,’ says project architect Michael Kvist. ‘The division of the building into towers – plus the circular design of those towers and the choice of materiality – is a measure to scale and adapt the structure to the surrounding city.’

Clad in Tombac – an alloy of copper and zinc – the façade glistens in the sun and adds warmth in the rain. Horizontal and vertical brise soleil add a sense of depth and relief to the building, as well as delivering the obvious benefits of shielding the interior from excessive solar gain and providing shelter from the wind that circulates the curved façade.

Shops, cafes and restaurants are located at entrances on all sides of the building, with parking hidden below grade and an open public space located on the first floor in the open space between the towers. On the tenth floor, a ‘skybar’ is also open to the public so that those who do not work in the building are given the opportunity to enjoy a new view of the city. ‘Incorporating public functions is very important to generate and support city life in and around the building,’ Kvist concludes. ‘It fulfils the vision of creating a new and positive identity for Axeltorv and the surrounding area.’
